Vineyard

Sierra Bonita Vineyards is a small estate vineyard located at 17251 West Ash Creek Road, approximately 22 miles northwest of Willcox, Arizona, in the fertile Sulphur Springs Valley of Graham County at an elevation of about 4,300 feet. Nestled near the historic Sierra Bonita Ranch established in 1872, the roughly 10–11 acre vineyard was planted in the late 1990s and benefits from the region’s high-desert climate—characterized by warm days, cool nights, and rich agricultural soils well-suited for full-bodied red varietals such as Mourvèdre and Aglianico. The site features a scenic, high-elevation setting that supports sustainable, hands-on viticulture practices in Arizona’s emerging Willcox wine region. Today the vineyard continues as a quiet agricultural property within southern Arizona’s growing wine country.

The Grapes

Aglianico grapes at Sierra Bonita Vineyards are well-adapted to the high-desert terroir of the Sulphur Springs Valley near Willcox, Arizona. Grown as part of the small 10–11 acre estate at an elevation of approximately 4,300 feet, these vines take advantage of intense sunlight, warm days, cool nights, and the area’s fertile soils. The variety yields small, thick-skinned berries that develop bold structure, deep color, and complex notes of dark fruit, dried herbs, and earth—characteristics that reflect the challenging yet rewarding conditions of Arizona’s Willcox region. The Aglianico blocks continue to contribute distinctive, age-worthy fruit to select Arizona winemakers

Vinification

The Aglianico grapes were hand picked and transported to Arizona Stronghold in Camp Verde, Arizona for vinification. The grapes were destemmed and fermented with native yeasts on the skins for 14 days with several punch downs a day before being pressed to one neutral french oak barrel. The wine finished fermenting in barrel and was aged sur lie for 9 months with no bâtonnage. Racked once before bottling. Unfined, unfiltered with 20 PPM of added SO2.

Expression

Deep ruby garnet in the glass, with aromas of black plum, dried cherry, fresh white pepper, dried Mediterranean herbs and a subtle savoury earthiness reflective of the high desert. On the palate the wine is medium bodied with fine grained, dusty tannins and vibrant acidity, blood orange running the length of it. Rustic yet elegant, it lingers on dark fruit, spice and a peppery, dried herb finish.
