Vineyard

Sierra Bonita Vineyards is a small estate vineyard located at 17251 West Ash Creek Road, approximately 22 miles northwest of Willcox, Arizona, in the fertile Sulphur Springs Valley of Graham County at an elevation of about 4,300 feet. Nestled near the historic Sierra Bonita Ranch established in 1872, the roughly 10–11 acre vineyard was planted in the late 1990s and benefits from the region’s high-desert climate—characterized by warm days, cool nights, and rich agricultural soils well-suited for full-bodied red varietals such as Mourvèdre and Aglianico. The site features a scenic, high-elevation setting that supports sustainable, hands-on viticulture practices in Arizona’s emerging Willcox wine region. Today the vineyard continues as a quiet agricultural property within southern Arizona’s growing wine country.

The Grapes

Mourvèdre grapes at Sierra Bonita Vineyards thrive in the high-desert conditions of the Sulphur Springs Valley near Willcox, Arizona. Planted as part of the roughly 10–11 acre estate at an elevation of about 4,300 feet, these vines benefit from warm daytime temperatures, cool nights, and the region’s rich agricultural soils. The variety produces small, concentrated clusters that develop deep color, firm structure, and distinctive earthy, spicy, and dark fruit characteristics well-suited to Arizona’s challenging climate. Today the Mourvèdre blocks remain a valued part of the vineyard, supplying fruit known for its intensity and complexity to select Arizona winemakers.

Vinification

The Mourvedre grapes were hand picked with the help of friends and transported to Arizona Stronghold in Camp Verde, Arizona for vinification. The grapes were destemmed and fermented in 3 open top barrels with native yeasts on the skins for 18 days with several punch downs a day before being pressed to 2 neutral french oak barrels. The wine finished fermenting in barrel and was aged sur lie for 9 months with no bâtonnage. Racked once before bottling. Unfined, unfiltered with 20 PPM of added SO2.

Expression

This Mourvèdre moves through the glass like liquid silk — deep garnet, almost weightless in feel despite its complexity. Open-top fermentation and unhurried barrel aging coax out layers of black olive, dried violet, bramble, and a faint whisper of charcuterie that never overwhelms. The tannins are impossibly fine, dissolving mid-palate into a long, seamless finish. Delicate, precise, and quietly stunning.
